A portrait of Dr. Laurent Bruxelles, geomorphologist at INRAP (French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research) and IFAS-Research, Johanesburg, (French Institute of South Africa), team member of numerous Cfee research projects (including LSA Sequence, Lalibela, Ifat, Gedeo) was filmed during recent fieldwork in Djibouti and South Africa.

Prof. Rodolfo Fattovich passed away on March 23, 2018 after having contributed for more than four decades to the archaeology of Northeastern Africa and the Horn of Africa.  Here is his an obituary by  Prof. Andrea Manzo, University of Naples « L’Orientale ».

Bourses post-doctorales de la Fondation Croix-Rouge française pour la recherche humanitaire et sociale

Date limite de candidature : 15 avril 2018

La Fondation Croix-Rouge attribue chaque année une dizaine de bourses postdoctorales en sciences humaines et sociales. Cette année, à l’appel général intitulé « Transition humanitaire : les enjeux de l’autonomie », s’ajoutent plusieurs appels spécifiques soutenus par certains de nos partenaires. Ces appels partenaires  proposent des sujets plus précis, dont les objectifs correspondent aux thématiques et réflexions communes à la Fondation et ses partenaires engagés sur la recherche avec les mêmes convictions de sa nécessité. Il est possible de proposer jusqu’à deux candidatures, une pour l’appel général et une pour les autres appels. Toutefois, chaque candidat ne pourra se voir attribuer qu’une seule bourse.

The Somali Studies International Association (SSIA) will held its 13th congress in Hargeysa, Somaliland in July 2018.

40 years after its creation, SSIA will return to Hargeysa and the Horn of Africa for the first congress in a Somali-speaking territory since 2001.

Organizers welcome papers in the fields of Earth Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Please see the conference website and call for papers for abstract submission and further details.

The 20th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies will be organised by Mekelle University, in close communication with the International Organising Committee (IOC), the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) and other stakeholders, academic institutions and partners worldwide, following the long established tradition.

ICES20 welcomes specialised academic panels to be organised by small groups of researchers active in Ethiopian Studies worldwide. Panels should be oriented towards the leading theme of the conference « Regional and Global Ethiopia – Interconnections and Identities ».

Journal of Eastern African Studies – Celebrating Ten Years (free access)

The Editors of Journal of Eastern African Studies present a selection of articles commemorating the 10th anniversary of the journal.

The articles chosen for this anniversary collection represent  the breadth of research published in the journal’s first decade, from political economy and conflict to trade networks and urban studies. They are on free access during  the time of this anniversary.

Among these papers, four concern Ethiopia (by Sabine Planel, Alemseged Abbay, Dereje Feyissa, David Turton).
