Gondar & Addis Ababa in the camera lens of the Dakar-Djibouti Mission – NME Exhibition

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION / EXPOSITION TEMPORAIRE

MISSION DAKAR-DJIBOUTI, 1932

Gondar & Addis Ababa

In the camera lens of the French scholars

From 10th to 30th JULY 2024, National Museum of Ethiopia

The Dakar-Djibouti Mission was a French scientific expedition that crossed Africa from the west to the east coast between May 1931 and February 1933. This photographic exhibition, curated by Sisay Sahle Beyene (Assistant Professor, Historian, University of Gondar), aims to share the precious corpus of images collected by the Dakar-Djibouti Mission in Gondar and Addis Ababa during the scientific team’s stay in Ethiopia in 1932-1933.

This exhibition initiative is part of a wider project being carried out by the Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac Museum since 2023. The preparation of the exhibition “Mission Dakar-Djibouti. Counter-Enquiry”, to be held in 2025, has provided an opportunity to take a fresh look at the archives and collections of this mythical scientific expedition and to carry out a corresponding field research.

After its temporary installation in Addis Ababa, the photographic exhibition will be presented and promoted permanently at the University of Gondar, in the hope that the sharing of archives will be an occasion to revive memories and collect new testimonies, thus continuing the counter-inquiry.
