Abstract

This study addresses a contentious yet understudied topic in migration and labour market research: the combined consequences of graduate unemployment and failed migration- failure to make to migration destination after committing significant time, financial resources, and personal effort along the route between the country of origin and the intended destination.

Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 16 unemployed university graduates who experienced failed migration, 12 parents of unemployed graduates, and six key informants. The analysis shows that both the individuals and their households undergo substantial socioeconomic, psychological, and health-related impacts. These include the loss of essential livelihood assets – such as land, housing, livestock, and perennial trees – as well as increased vulnerability to indebtedness, exposure to criminal activity, and mental health problems including depression and suicidal ideation. The consequences of graduate unemployment and failed migration are multidimensional and extend beyond the individual to affect entire households. The findings provide insights into the overlooked burdens of irregular and unsuccessful migration, particularly in contexts with constrained employment opportunities. This study helps fill a gap in qualitative research on the interlinked consequences of youth unemployment and failed migration and offers evidence for policymakers, governmental institutions, and non-governmental organizations working to address these challenges.
