This guide accompanies the Historical Archaeology Gallery of the National Museum of Ethiopia, which presents over 3,000 years of Ethiopian history, from the 1st millennium BCE to the 19th century. It explores how archaeology reveals the development of early kingdoms, the spread of religions, long-distance trade, and everyday life across centuries.
This publication is a key outcome of the broader exhibition project based on the museum’s archaeological collections. The guide offers a comprehensive overview of these collections, including well-known and lesser-known sites such as Aksum, Yeha, Adulis, Matara, and Hawelti.
It also reflects over 80 years of fruitful Franco-Ethiopian collaboration in archaeology. Featuring contributions from leading specialists of both countries, this guide is both an academic resource and an invitation to the general public. It introduces archaeological methods, showcases major discoveries, and presents a clear, chronological view of Ethiopia’s historical development, a perspective not previously available in one place.
The publication features a refined design, with photographs, maps, and timelines that enhance understanding. It presents a selection of the objects on display : tools, ceramics, religious and royal artifacts, and everyday items, explaining each in its historical and cultural context.
More than a museum companion, the Guidebook for the Historical Archaeology Exhibition is a testament to a shared scientific and cultural journey. Whether used in classrooms, by museum visitors, or by curious readers worldwide, it stands as a valuable reference for discovering and understanding Ethiopia’s rich archaeological heritage.
