The seminar focuses on funerary monumentalism in the Horn of Africa, with particular attention to the study of tumuli, emblematic structures that reflect the social organization, beliefs, and funerary practices of ancient societies. The analysis of these monuments reveals a remarkable architectural diversity : some tumuli appear as simples mounds of stone or earth, while others display an internal architectural complexity, incorporating burial chambers, corridors, or symbolic arrangements designed to reinforce their ritual and memorial functions.

Chronologically, these monuments belong mainly to the protohistoric and pastoral periods, while suggesting continuities in funerary practices and territorial uses. Their construction demonstrates not only sophisticated technical skills but also a strong capacity for collective mobilization and a clear will to anchor occupation in the landscape over time.

The analysis of their geographical distribution across the Horn of Africa highlights a widespread diffusion, accompanied by specific regional concentrations.

The Gobaad basin, which forms the central focus of this study, emerges as a particularly rich and revealing area. The density and variety of its tumuli, their location around lacustrine zones and pastoral corridors, as well as their diverse typology, make it a major center of funerary monumentalism in Eastern Africa. This region provides a privileged context for exploring funerary logics, symbolic dimensions, and territorial issues associated with the erection of such structures.
