By Carolin Schafer, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen

Monday 6th October, 4:30 PM

French Center for Ethiopian Studies. Conference open to all.

The French Center for Ethiopian Studies is happy to present the seminar “Sacred Images from Ethiopia. Intercultural Workshops and the Cooperation of Artists from Ethiopia, the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Indian Ocean” in collaboration with Carolin Schäfer.

The seminar discusses the key findings of Carolin Schäfer’s dissertation at Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich. Her project focuses on the collection of Ethiopian icons at the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich, comprising 93 objects, and the development of these icons. She analyses the objects in their historical and cultural contexts, considering both the inspirations of surrounding cultures and the historical and social changes within the Christian kingdom.

The presentation aims to provide a representative explanation of each period’s development and new artistic changes, ranging from the earliest recognisable local production in the 15th century up to modern pieces and originating from Coptic, Armenian, Byzantine, Italian, Jain, Deccan and Mughal cultures.
