Seminar – “Charles Martel films Ethiopia in 1909”
By Hugues Fontaine, photographer and CFEE associate
Friday 10th of October, 2:30 PM
French Center for Ethiopian Studies. Conference open to all.
The Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) is the custodian of a collection belonging to the Compagnie des cinématographes Le Lion, a production company that ceased operations in 1911. This company, which was active until 1911, aimed to shoot films around the world in order to show them in cinemas, usually as the first part of a screening. It responded to a proposal from a cinematographer named Charles Martel to go and shoot images in Ethiopia. In 1909, Charles Martel brought back 2,300 metres of film, or around one hour and twenty minutes of cinema.
Hugues Fontaine presents a selection of edited extracts from this exceptional archive of Ethiopia at the turn of the century, showing official ceremonies, the royal family and various monuments in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa and Harar, some of which have now disappeared.
