AFROBEE Project Kick-off Meeting
On 26 March 2026, the AFROBEE project will officially be launched during its kick-off meeting, which will take place at the Centre français des études éthiopiennes (CFEE), Addis Ababa, from 08.30 am to 17.30 pm.
Funded by the Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR) under grant ANR-25-CE54-2522, the project is led by Yvonne Treis (LLACAN, CNRS) in collaboration with Yoseph Yonas (Wolkite University) and several academic partners in Ethiopia and Europe.
AFROBEE investigates the language of beekeeping and honey hunting in Africa. Through linguistic documentation and ethnolinguistic research, the project explores how African languages describe beekeeping practices, the relationships between humans, bees and honey predators, and the cultural, social and medicinal importance of honey.
Based on fieldwork, annotated corpora and lexical databases, AFROBEE focuses on three main case studies:
• beekeeping among the Kambaata in Ethiopia
• honey hunting among the Hadza in Tanzania
• beekeeping among speakers of Berber and Arabic in Algeria and Morocco
The project also investigates shared vocabulary and lexical patterns related to bees and honey across African languages, offering new insights into the historical diffusion of beekeeping techniques across the continent.
