Preliminary results of the VAPOR-Afar project: paleoenviroment, human settlement and obsidian circulation in the Late Stone Age and Ceramic Neolithic of the lake Abhe basin, Lower Awash, Afar, par/by Lamya KHALIDI
In 2014, the VAPOR-Afar program identified 11 new sites of Late Stone Age and Ceramic Neolithic date in two paleodune regions that were once near the banks of Lake Abhe. This lake, which is the final drainage of the Awash River and is currently in an acute regression phase, was a mega lake of 6000 km at its maximum transgression during wetter periods of the Pleistocene and Holocene. The region was rich in river and lake resources, as well as obsidian sources, which made it ideal for human occupation by fisher-hunter-gatherers and the first Neolithic ceramic producing societies in Ethiopia. This conference will present the VAPOR-Afar project and our very recent 2016 preliminary paleoenvironmental, geological and archaeological results. In addition, we will present preliminary results of team member Gourguen Davtian’s mapping and modelling of these sites and their changing surroundings.
