The democracy in the unrecognized state of Somaliland has been described as a male-dominated democracy: women’s political representation, in the government as well as in the Parliament and in the local councils, is poor. Women in politics and particularly in civil society are campaigning for a more consistent representation. Building on three months of fieldwork in 2017 and 2019 , Louise will describe the challenges that women are facing and how they campaigned since the last presidential election in November, 2017. She will also try to demonstrate that the discord within civil society regarding this issue is indicating a broader evolution of Somaliland civil society.
Louise Klein is a student at Ecole Normale Supérieure. Her master’s dissertation focused on youth political involvement in Somaliland.
