SEMINAR – Linguistic Project in Kambatta
SEMINAR/SÉMINAIRE
No sweet without sweat: A linguistic documentation of beekeeping in Kambaata
Friday 27th October, 2PM
@ CFEE – French Center for Ethiopian Studies, Berhanu Abebe Library
By Yvonne Treis (CNRS-LLACAN, France), Yoseph Yonas Zecharias (University of Gondar) and Abel Yonas Zekarias (Bielefeld University, Germany).
Yvonne Treis is a research fellow and deputy director of the LLACAN laboratory (Language, Languages and Cultures of Africa), UMR 8135. She has been working in Ethiopia, particularly in the south, for over 20 years, collaborating on a great diversity of linguistic topics with the universities of Addis Ababa, Gondar, Jimma…
In this seminar Yvonne Treis, Yoseph Yonas and Abel Yonas will present some results of an ongoing collaborative project on the language of beekeeping in Kambaata which documents the lexicon and records – in written, audio and photographic form – the practical steps of honey production and the cultural setting in which honey is consumed.
In the first part, they will give an overview of the particularities of the lexicon. The commented wordlist encompasses 150+ entries and divides into lexemes that are unique to the semantic field of beekeeping (e.g. shaala ‘partition in a beehive’) and lexemes that are also used in other fields but adopt a particular meaning or are of central importance in the context of beekeeping (e.g. qachchuta ‘1. large basket to store grain, 2. beehive’). They will provide selected examples of how lexical entries are organized: transcription, grammatical information, translation, semantic field, example, photo and audio file.
In the second part, will be presented excerpts from interviews conducted with beekeepers on their work and the social significance of honey. This data source is supplemented by procedural texts, a narrative, and poems that were created in praise of the bees.
