Industrial Work Dynamics: Report on a photographic exhibition

COMPTE-RENDU D’EXPOSITION / EXHIBITION REPORT

Industrial Work Dynamics

Portraits of Ethiopian workers

by Constance Perrin-Jolly (CFEE)

[in English]

“Industrial Work Dynamics – Portraits of Ethiopian workers” follows on from a first exhibition on work, “WOmen at work”, at the Ethio-French Alliance of Addis Ababa in January-February 2018.

This work falls within the perspective of social photography that aims to “show” social phenomena to a wide audience. This second exhibition also has a research objective: inspired by the photo-elucidation approach, where photography is used as a medium for interviews (Collier, 1967, Harper, 2002), the exhibition invites the visitor to share his impressions about the photographs. While the latter reveal the eye of a French sociologist of work, the participation of the audience will allow to give an account of the vision of workers in Ethiopia on these same work photographs.

By Constance Perrin-Joly

The Ethiopian Society of Sociologists, Social Workers and Anthropologists (ESSSWA) has organized, on Friday 22th and Saturday 23th of March, its 15th conference about « Rethinking our policies and practices toward tackling social and behavioral problems of Ethiopia ». More than 100 people have attended this event, which demonstrates the importance of this association for social sciences researchers. Founded in 1996, it has now more than 20 years of existence. This event was a great opportunity to observe the dynamics of sociological research and profession in Ethiopia.

Displacements in Ethiopia: Report of the conference organized by the French Center in 2018

By Anais Maro & Constance Perrin-Joly

The 2018 SCA Biennial Meeting, cosponsored by the Society for Visual Anthropology,  was an innovative conference talking about displacements all over the world without any movement of the participants and speakers. 1,300 people had participated from over 40 countries, screening video panels within local nodes for half of them. According to the organizers, the virtual platform saved more than 425 tons of carbon emissions, as much as taking 11,500 cars off the road for three days.

In this context, the 20th of April 2018, the French Center for Ethiopian Studies has organized a local node hosting 40 people at the Bellevue Hotel, coming from Ethiopian Universities, United Nations, African Union, or NGOs.
