Asfaw Tilahun Feleke is lecturer at Wollo University. He was awarded  a B.Ed. degree in History Education at Bahir Dar University in 2003 and a MA degree in History at Addis Ababa University in 2011. In October 2013, he enrolled in a doctoral program at the department of Linguistics and Philology, Addis Ababa University. His dissertation is entitled Edition, Translation and Historical Analysis of Tarikä Nägäst of Zuramba (South Gondär), his advisors are Dr. Anaïs Wion (CNRS, IMAF) and Dr. Endris Mohammed (AAU).

In September 2017, with the help of a grant from the CFEE, Asfaw Tilahun was able to investigate oral sources in order to fill gaps in the historical narration of manuscripts particularly concerning the history of Zuramba Church and its vicinity.

His research focuses on an ethnic group from the Balé lowlands, the Dube. He presents here the results of his research conducted with the support of a CFEE field grant in 2017.

Introduction to being busy

The first field mission of the AGXIM project took place between February 11th and 24th, 2018. This project directed by Cécile Doubre (IPGS, Strasbourg) and Eloi Ficquet (EHESS, Paris) aims to document human adaptation in the Awsa and Tendaho Basin (Lower Awash valley, Afar). Together with Ethiopian collaborators from Addis Ababa University, Mekele University, the ARCCH and the Afar Bureau of Culture and Tourism, the interdisciplinary team brings together specialists from the Earth Sciences and the Humanities who had previously been working independently in the Afar region for the last decade or more.

His supervisor is Professor Tesema Ta’a. He is conducting research on the history of mineral resources and their extraction in Wallaga, western Ethiopia in the 20th century.  He is one of the recipients of the CFEE field scholarships. Vanessa Pedrotti is PhD candidate in history at Université d’Aix-Marseille (Institut des mondes africains – IMAF, UMR 8171). Her advisor is Henri Médard. She is conducting research on the history of leprosy in Ethiopia, from the missionary actions to the handling of this issue by the Ethiopian State.  She is one of the recipients of the CFEE field scholarships. She conducted a fieldwork at the St. Antony Leprosy in Harar in September 2017. In this text, she explains the main contributions of this fieldwork financed by the CFEE.
