Anaïs Maro (PhD candidate, Queensland University of Technology / CFEE) and Dr. Constance Perrin-Joly (CFEE) propose a panel and a local node to take part in this conference on April 20, 8:30am-4:30pm at the Bellevue Hotel, Addis Ababa.

Moving in the face of uncertainty:          the life of Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia

Mulu Getachew is a PhD candidate and part-time lecturer at the Department of Social Anthropology, Addis Ababa University. Her research focuses on trans-border migration and  Eritrean refugee camps in Tigray. She is funded by the NORHED project ‘Borderland dynamics in East Africa’ of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.  She presents here the results of a fieldwork conducted on October 2017 in the Hitsats camp, Tigray, which was supported by a CFEE research grant.

Le Centre français des Études éthiopiennes (CFEE) d’Addis-Abeba (Éthiopie), Institut français de recherche à l’étranger (IFRE) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Développement international (MAEDI) et du Centre national de la Recherche scientifique (CNRS / INSHS), propose aux étudiants et doctorants travaillant sur l’Éthiopie et la Corne de l’Afrique des financements partiels permettant la réalisation de missions de terrains et/ou l’étude de collections dans les musées.

The French Centre for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE) in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), French Research institute Abroad (IFRE) of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development (MAEDI) and of the National Centre for Scientific Researches (CNRS / INSHS) offers partial funds for field works and/or study of collections in the museums to students and PhD candidate doing their researches on Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

Le deuxième volume des Cahiers des IFRE, la revue des Instituts français de recherche à l’étranger (UMIFRE), vient de paraître sur le thème « L’Afrique dans la globalisation ». L’Éthiopie y est très présente, avec deux articles portant l’un sur les dynamiques migratoires (Fesseha Berhe, « Youth on Perilous Journeys: Irregular Migrants from Tegray, Northern Ethiopia, to the Gulf Region », p. 8-16, initialement paru dans les Annales d’Éthiopie, vol. 28, année 2013), l’autre sur les investissements chinois (Jean-Pierre Cabestan, « La Chine et l’Éthiopie : entre affinités autoritaires et coopération économique », p. 65-82, article initialement paru dans Perspectives chinoises, n° 4, 2012, publication de nos collègues du Centre d’études français sur la Chine contemporaine – CEFC).

The second issue of Cahiers des IFRE, the journal of the French Research Institutes Abroad (UMIFRE) has just been released. Its topic is « Africa in the globalization ». Ethiopia is particularly present in this issue, with two articles, the first on migration dynamics (Fesseha Berhe, « Youth on Perilous Journeys: Irregular Migrants from Tegray, Northern Ethiopia, to the Gulf Region », p. 8-16, first published in Annales d’Éthiopie, vol. 28, year 2013), the second on Chinese investments (Jean-Pierre Cabestan, « La Chine et l’Éthiopie : entre affinités autoritaires et coopération économique », p. 65-82,  first published in Perspectives chinoises, n° 4, 2012, the journal of our colleagues from the French Research Centre on Contemporary China – CEFC).

International Workshop, May 5, 2015 at the French Research Centre in Jerusalem: East African Migrations in the Middle East: A Reassessment

The International Workshop on ‘East African Migrations in the Middle East: A Reassessment’ organized by the French Research Centre in Jerusalem (CRFJ) and co-sponsored by the French Centre for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE) was held in Jerusalem on May 5, 2015 (read the program on CRFJ website: http://www.crfj.org/?p=3773). The aim of the workshop was to create a forum for policy makers and scholars (both advanced and young scholars) to discuss on the new trends in the existing research on migration and to offer new, interdisciplinary and trans-global research paradigms. In the workshop, papers focused on East African migrations in the Middle East were presented by scholars coming from France, Israel and Ethiopia and from a wide range of disciplines in the field of social sciences and humanities.

Memory of Slavery in Tegray, Northern Ethiopia

ᶜAdi Ḥara (‘Village of the Freed’): Memory of Slavery in Tegray, Northern Ethiopia

Fesseha Berhe est professeur assistant au département d’histoire et de gestion du patrimoine de l’Université de Mekelle. Spécialiste de l’histoire et de la sociologie des migrations éthiopiennes, il est actuellement chercheur associé au CFEE dans le cadre du programme de recherche « Migrations dans/de la Corne de l’Afrique ». Il a participé en octobre 2014 à la conférence Slafco2014 : Esclavage en Afrique : histoire, héritages de Nairobi, un évènement et une participation appuyés par le CFEE. Sa présentation traitait de l’histoire contemporaine de l’esclavage dans le Nord éthiopien et de la question de la « réinstallation » des esclaves affranchis durant l’occupation italienne. Ce texte présente les principaux enjeux de cette recherche.

Fesseha Berhe is an assistant professor at Mekelle University, Department of History and Heritage Management. He is a specialist of the history and sociology of Ethiopian migrations, he is presently an associate researcher within the CFEE research program on « Migrations in/from the Horn of Africa ». In October 2014, he attended the conference Slafco2014: Slavery in Africa: past, legacies and present, an event and a participation supported by CFEE. His presentation dealt with the contemporary history of slavery in Northern Ethiopia and the « resettlement » of freed slaves during the Italian occupation. This text introduces the main issues raised by this research.

Archiving a City: The Future of Jerusalem Past

Le projet ERC « Open Jerusalem », dont le volet éthiopien a été présenté par Vincent Lemire et Stéphane Ancel au CFEE le 13 mai 2015 (lire l’annonce et les résumés sur ce blog), tient une Conférence internationale à Paris et Marne-la-Vallée les 25 et 26 juin 2015. Elle est intitulée : Archiving a City: The Future of Jerusalem Past.  Le programme est consultable sur le blog du projet « Open Jerusalem » (en lien ici).

The ERC project « Open Jerusalem », of which the Ethiopian part has been presented at CFEE on May 13th by Vincent Lemire and Stéphane Ancel (read the announcement and abstracts on this blog), will hold an International Conference in Paris and Marne-la-Vallée on June 25th and 26th 2015. It is entitled Archiving a City: The Future of Jerusalem Past. Program is available on the « Open Jerusalem » project blog (follow the link here).
